Most of Iowa sees “fairly normal” March weather

Most of Iowa experienced fairly normal weather conditions during March.

The USDA says precipitation improved mid-month, welcome ahead of widespread planting, helping to green pastures and cover crops, but limiting fieldwork in parts of the state.

Where producers were able to get some work done, the big features were dry fertilizer and anhydrous application, and manure hauling, with grain movement ongoing and some reports of early oat planting.

While that wet weather did lead to muddy conditions in some feedlots, there were reportedly no major issues with calving and hay supplies were adequate.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume Monday.
