More rain and temperature variations coming in May

As the calendar turns to May, Brownfield meteorologist Greg Soulje says farmers can expect rain and wide-ranging temperatures across the Midwest.

He says the northern corn belt will be hit with some cooler temperatures.

“Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio will be the focal point of this cool to cold air. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have some frost and freeze concerns even at this late calendar day.”

He says there are two weather systems moving through in the next 3-5 days each carrying up to an inch of rain, which is normal for this time of year.

“Later into May I think this wet weather pattern will likely continue on, favoring northern and eastern areas of the Corn Belt.”

He says there is some concern that cool, wet weather in the northern and eastern regions of the corn belt will carry into June.  

“We do anticipate some ongoing planting, late planting and perhaps replanting issues.”

Soulje predicts a little more heat and drying time in the western and southwest regions of the corn belt.
