MO farmer’s corn harvest is good, not great

A Western Cornbelt farmer’s harvest is picking up. Eastern Missouri farmer Mark Scott tells Brownfield his corn dried out quickly this fall.

“Corn’s been coming out, probably, 15 to 17 [percent],” Scott said. “The quality has just been really good. The yields, for the amount of rain we had this year, I was expecting a little higher yields.”

He said extensive rainfall in June caused him to lose his corn on his river bottom ground and it washed off some nitrogen on his remaining crop, causing yields to drop some.

“People were expecting better yields, I think, with all the moisture we got,” he said. “But some of the reports I’ve had, [farmers] are a little bit disappointed in the way they finished out here at the end with the dry weather.”

Scott said his crop is still average to above average coming in from 160 to 190 bushels an acre.
