MO farmer says potential in Africa for U.S. corn

Africa is seen as a potential market for U.S. corn as commodity groups search for more buyers around the world.

Mike Moreland is a Missouri Corn Growers director and chairman of the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council which works closely with the U.S. Grains Council and U.S. Meat Export Federation, “You can fit United States, Europe, India and China in the boundaries of Africa. That’s how big it is. They have a huge population, poverty level, in need of food. Our products are the fastest and easiest way that they can expand their economy and expand their lifestyle.”

Moreland says they’re also looking toward the Middle East, “We’re just looking at anybody that wants a fast and good product. That’s where we’re looking at.”

Moreland was on the recent trade trip to Colombia, now the 4th largest market for U.S. corn and says Mexico, the top buyer, could be next.

Brownfield interviewed Moreland, who farms south of Kansas City, near Harrisonville, at the 2019 Commodity Classic.
