Missouri farmer anxious to start planting

At least one Missouri farmer is chomping at the bit to start planting.

Carroll county farmer Kyle Durham said typically in his area, soybeans are planted in early May and corn in early April. But he tells Brownfield, more farmers are finding early planting can boost yields.

“We’ve been trying to move our planting window up as much as we can,” Durham said. “Given the moisture that we’ve seen over the last week or so, that may not be something that we’re going to be able to achieve.”

And Durham said he’s expecting more moisture next week.

Durham, who farms near the Missouri River, said he’s looking to fully recover this year from flooding damage suffered in 2019.

“We were able to get over 80 percent of our acres last year in crop,” he said. “And we’re extremely optimistic that we’re going to be able to get back all 100 percent of our acres this year.”

Durham said he’s not making any adjustments to his corn and soybean rotation this growing season.
