Hundreds of young people from across the Upper Midwest are gathering at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds this weekend for a premier beef industry event.

The 16th annual Minnesota Beef Expo runs through Sunday and Kent Thiesse, one of the show organizers, says participants stay busy year-round preparing.

“Most of these young people are involved in the breeding portion of the beef division, so in other words many of them start out with a show heifer and keep the heifer and breed her to have a calf.”

He tells Brownfield the Beef Expo continues to develop new ways of introducing young people to the business.

“Like the Knowledge Bowl, judging contests and fitting contests.”

And Thiesse says the event is a great first step for anyone interested in the beef industry.

“There’s a lot of networking that goes on with experienced youth beef exhibitors (and) experienced breeders that have cattle at the sale.”

As many as 500 youth from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa will be showcasing about 800 head of cattle during the Beef Expo Junior Show on Sunday.
