Midwest family farms make up 46% of 2019 Chapter 12 Bankruptcies

Family farm bankruptcies in 2019 were up 20 percent and the most in the past eight years according to a new analysis from the American Farm Bureau.

Chapter 12 family farm bankruptcies have increased consecutively over the past five years, totaling 595 in 2019 with nearly half occurring in the Midwest.

Wisconsin again had the highest number of filings on top of a record amount in 2018.  Georgia had the second-largest amount.  Ten states reported the highest or tied for the highest number of filings in the last decade including Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
