Michigan farmers sneak in planting between rains

About ten percent more of Michigan’s field crops have been planted during limited windows.

USDA says 77 percent of oats, 90 percent of sugarbeets, 33 percent of corn and 23 percent soybeans are now planted and all behind average.

Winter wheat condition declined to 39 percent good to excellent and 63 percent of the crop is jointed.

Asparagus harvest continues as the weather allows.  Planting of cucumbers, squash, zucchini and sweet corn continues as well as transplanting of tomatoes and peppers.  Frosts on May 20 and 21 only brought minimal damage to crops and pollination activity remains limited with the cool, wet weather.
