Michigan efforts for biofuels tax credit continue

Michigan ag groups and lawmakers plan to continue work on a biofuels tax credit in the new legislative session.

A bill, introduced by Senator Kevin Daley, would have offered qualifying retailers a tax credit for every gallon of higher ethanol blends sold, including E15 and E85.

Daley’s chief of staff Bryce Fisher tells Brownfield while the legislation passed the state Senate last year, it did not have enough support in the House.

“We do believe that ethanol is a reliable and efficient alternative to gas in addition to being cheaper,” he says.  “There were a lot of rumors circulating about whether ethanol was actually good for your car and we believe it is.”

Leaders with the Michigan Agri-Business Association and Michigan Corn Growers Association tell Brownfield they expect to support a similar measure sometime in 2023, but sponsorship could change with new committee assignments.

Daley was named the Vice Minority Chair of the Senate Ag Committee Thursday.

Brownfield interviewed Fisher as part of the Michigan Agri-Business Association Winter Conference.
