Meatpackers face additional antitrust suit

Another antitrust lawsuit has been filed against America’s largest meatpackers.  Pacific Agri-Products, Inc. has filed a class action complaint against JBS USA, Tyson Foods, Cargill, National Beef Packing Company, and Marfrig Global Foods.

The complaint filed in Minnesota District Court October 16th claims the meatpackers entered into contracts or conspiracy to fix, maintain, and raise the price of beef to levels that cannot be sustained in a competitive market.  The complaint alleges the packers have been doing this since at least 2015.

Pacific Agri-Products is seeking a jury trial.

It’s not the first time the major meatpackers have been sued.  There were similar cases filed in the same court by a consumer group, R-CALF-USA, and futures trader Michael Sevy last April.  Those cases were consolidated in July.

Judge Susan Richard Nelson and Magistrate Judge Katherine M. Menendez have been assigned to the new case.
