Measure to improve access to healthy food in Michigan

A Michigan Representative says the Healthy Food Access Act would increase opportunities for fresh food availability.

State Representative Dave Pagel, an apple grower from Berrien Springs, tells Brownfield the bill would establish a statewide program and resources to increase the accessibility of fresh food in underserved communities.  “There are the growers themselves, there’s processing and distribution systems, there’s the retailers, and our bill could help in any of those aspects.”

He says potential projects the act could support include providing infrastructure in underserved communities at the retail level or local farmers markets that lack the ability to accept electronic payments from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

Pagel expects to see movement on the measure before the end of this year.
