Markets hard to predict

Market certainty seems elusive to many crop and livestock producers right now.

Jeff Jorgenson owns a cow/calf operation and grows corn and soybeans in southwest Iowa and suggests it’s difficult to get a handle on U.S. crop production.

“I think this one’s going to be tough to be able to stick on a board, the variability is just going to be really high. I mean you can have variability in the same field, and there’s not a lot of consistency. And I think that’s pretty widespread.”

He tells Brownfield drought conditions have impacted his livestock, but the market has been strong.

“Obviously being dry, it’s a little tough on the pastures. But we definitely have demand for our product that we’re producing, so there’s a smile I guess for anybody that has a cow/calf operation because the calf price should be pretty solid.”

And Jorgenson says finished prices should be good too.
