Many ag groups pleased with USDA’s bioengineered food labeling rule

Many ag groups are praising the USDA’s final rule on the labeling of bioengineered – or genetically modified – food and beverages.

American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall says the rule is a victory for consumers who want transparency AND for the entire food value chain – from the farmer to food manufacturers.

American Soybean Association President Davie Stephens says the rule follows the intent of Congress by only requiring food that contains GMOs to be labeled bioengineered. Food companies can then provide additional information if they choose.

Under the rule, companies can use a designated symbol, a QR code, or the term “bioengineered” to disclose the product has GMOs.

National Corn Growers Association President Lynn Chrisp says farmers need a consistent system to provide consumers with information without stigmatizing the technology and this rule does that.

January 2022 is the mandatory compliance date for the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard.
