Manure injection equipment will be beneficial during the wet fall

USDA soil scientist Eric Young tells Brownfield his research is working to understand the differences between low-disturbance injecting manure versus surface broadcasting.

“In our neck of the woods a lot of larger farms are injecting but at the same time there are just as many surface broadcasting.”

He says low-disturbance injecting can minimize soil erosion and keep more nutrients in the field.“You really have to match your manure management with your tillage system, so if you are a strict no-till system then your options are more limited.”

Young works in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and says wet field conditions this fall could make manure applications difficult, but injection equipment does cause less compaction than broadcast spreaders.
