Lawmakers ask new House Speaker to prioritize farm bill

Sixty-one Republicans in the U.S. House are asking the new House Speaker Mike Johnson to prioritize a farm bill as soon as possible.

In a letter sent on Thursday, the lawmakers say the farm bill is a critical agenda item as farm and food security is national security.

Republicans on the U.S. House Agriculture Committee and lawmakers from Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin and other states signed the letter.

House Speaker Johnson has said in a different letter to Congress his plan is to pass a farm bill in December.
