It’s not too early to think about the 2023 Farm Bill

Farm Bureau Chief Economist John Newton says it’s time to think ahead to the 2023 Farm Bill.

“We’ve seen over the last few years that our farm safety nets aren’t prepared to deal with the natural disasters we’re facing,” he says. “It’s not prepared to deal with derechos, 30 named hurricanes, global pandemics, and retaliatory tariffs.”

He says strengthening commodity programs and crop insurance programs will likely be a top priority to ensure farmers receive more timely assistance.

Conservation programs are also top of mind…”how conservation programs can help us achieve some of our climate goals, how they can provide financial and technical assistance to farmers to generate carbon credits.”

Newton, speaking during the Farm Bureau FUSION Conference, says farmers and ranchers have an opportunity to be engaged in the process and visit with lawmakers.
