Iowa poultry producers monitoring HPAI cases in nearby states

Recent cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in South Dakota and Minnesota have the attention of Iowa Ag Secretary Mike Naig.

“Unfortunately, what it reminds us is that this is not just a spring migration event. In the last year we saw it both when the birds were moving north and south. Once again, unfortunately, it’s clear that the virus is circulating in the wild bird population.”

He tells Brownfield now is the time for poultry producers to boost their biosecurity measures. “Our producers have done tremendous work. The evidence was last year. We saw very little movement of the virus from farm to farm, whereas in 2015 we saw significant amount of farm to farm movement.”

Naig says Iowa hasn’t had a confirmed case of the virus since March.
