Iowa harvest winding down
Warm, dry conditions allowed fall fieldwork to advance in Iowa.
USDA’s latest weekly crop update says soybean harvest is virtually complete, with corn 94 percent harvested. The pace for both crops is about a week and-a-half faster than the five-year average.
Farmers are also completing fall tillage, applying fertilizer, baling stalks, and hauling manure.
Cattle continue to graze on stalks, with livestock producers saying there remain concerns about water supplies.
Statewide, topsoil moisture supplies are rated 58 percent short to very short. Subsoil moisture supplies are considered nearly 70 percent short to very short.
