Iowa farmer’s concerns about germination alleviated

A southeast Iowa farmer’s concerns about germination seem to be mostly alleviated.

Mitchell Hora of Washington says half his corn and half his soybeans were planted ahead of a recent stretch of damp, cold weather.

“I was really worried until I looked the other day and started digging around. The stuff I was looking at was still coming fine. I didn’t see any signs of disease, so I was happy about that.”

But with nearly five inches of rain the past 10 days, he tells Brownfield there are probably plants under water.

“I’m sure we have spots that are drowned out (and) spots where we’re definitely going to have issues, and I’m sure there’s going to be some replant. But for the most part, I was actually pleasantly surprised that I think we’re going to be okay.”

Hora and his father farm 800 acres of corn and soybeans.
