Iowa Farm Bureau outlines legislative priorities

Tax reform, landowner protections, and modernizing the state’s Grain Indemnity Fund are legislative priorities for Iowa Farm Bureau.

President Brent Johnson says Governor Reynolds addressed some of those issues during last week’s State of the State speech.

“It’s clear now that she wants to reduce the state’s income taxes, and as far as Farm Bureau is concerned, the idea that making sure property taxes don’t get abused in that process is mostly our main goal in that conversation.”

He tells Brownfield Iowa’s Grain Indemnity Fund needs to be updated.

“To make sure that the fund is large enough, number one. In today’s economic situation we’re in a lot different place than we were in the 1980’s. And then, to potentially increase the cap for those situations that do require the help of that indemnity fund.”

Johnson says foreign ag land ownership is another topic that will be discussed during the session, and Iowa Farm Bureau wants to ensure transparency and to uphold current regulations.
