Indiana corn conditions are variable  

Corn conditions are variable across Indiana, according to Purdue Extension Corn Specialist Dan Quinn.

“The big thing for Indiana corn is that it’s all over the place, variable,” he says. “The USDA put out its report at 189 bushels per acre. I think that’s a little bit too high based on the condition rating. It’s hovering around 50-54 percent good to excellent, which is down from what we typically want to see.”

He tells Brownfield the central and west-central parts of the state have been dry while other areas have had flooding issues.

“I’ve been in some corn fields that are really struggling and aren’t looking very good, but I’ve also been in corn fields that are some of the best that I’ve seen,” he says. “It’s very dependent on where you are in the state.”

Quinn says he doesn’t expect corn yields in Indiana to be as high as last year.
