Impacts of HPAI on poultry production and prices

The USDA tightened poultry supplies in its latest supply and demand report and an ag economist says this could become the norm until cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza subside.

University of Missouri’s Scott Brown.  “We’ll continue to see relatively tight supplies,” he says.  “Especially turkey.  I think turkey is one where we’re seeing more effects from highly pathogenic avian influenza in terms of turkey supplies available.”

He tells Brownfield USDA dropped turkey production 150 million pounds in its latest report and projected turkey prices to increase about 4 cents per pound.

Brown says HPAI also impacted broiler production, which USDA says declined 25 million pounds.  “USDA now says chicken prices will be $.315 higher than where they had them pegged back in March for this year.”

USDA also lowered egg production 315 million dozen with a projected price increase of 21.5 cents per dozen.

The next set of supply and demand numbers comes out May 12th.
