Illinois Soybean Association offering free testing during SCN Action Month

The Illinois Soybean Association is focused on awareness and solutions during Soybean Cyst Nematode Action Month.

Outreach Agronomist Stephanie Porter tells Brownfield they have partnered with the University of Illinois Plant Clinic to offer free sampling for farmers to test egg counts in their fields.

“Even if you are aware of soybean cyst nematode and you have tested on your farm previously, we want to make you aware that those populations could be building in your fields and you don’t know it.”

Porter says farmers can contact ISA for a free testing kit and shipping label as well.

She says they are also funding research projects at Southern Illinois University to improve SCN management.

“One of the projects that we’re working on is to assess if cover crops could be a tool to use against soybean cyst nematode populations in the field and then another project is looking at multi spectral platforms or drone imagery to see if it can spot soybean cyst nematode out in the field.”
