Illinois farmer expecting corn yields well above average

A south-central Illinois farmer says his corn yields this harvest should compete with last year’s record crop.

Rolland Vandeveer of Salem tells Brownfield his area has had a great growing season with timely rains.

“Last year we had the best crop we’ve ever raised on corn and soybeans. This year the corn looks extremely good again. I think it is going to be well above average.”

He says he uses the Granular Insights yield calculator as a faster and more accurate alternative to manually counting kernels.

“You take a picture of the ear, and it will total the kernels and add it to the information you already have in there about population, variety and rainfall. Then it calculates the estimated yield of the field. It is really a good tool to have in the toolkit.”

Vandeveer says his target date to begin harvesting corn is October 1st, which is about a week later than normal.
