Illinois cover crop premium discount program applications open this week

Applications open Thursday for the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Fall Covers for Spring Savings Program.

Eligible acres are those planted to cover crops in the fall of 2022 that will be planted to an insurable crop in 2023. Eligible applicants receive a premium discount of $5 per acre on the following year’s crop insurance for every acre of cover crop enrolled and verified in the program.

With additional money from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, there is funding for up to 140,000 acres for 2023.

Applications open at 8am Thursday and funding will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Last year, the acreage allotment was met in less than 24 hours. Applications will close on January 15^th.
