Illinois county fair cancellations begin amid COVID-19

COVID-19 related health concerns are taking over as county fair season approaches in Illinois.

The Macon County Fair board has voted to cancel their 2020 fair originally scheduled to kick off June 9th in Decatur. Other counties with fairs scheduled for early to mid-June, including Pike County have indicated they are considering cancelling or changing fair dates.

In a statement provided to Brownfield, an Illinois Department of Agriculture representative says the health and safety of fair-goers is top priority and they continue to work closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health to determine the best course forward for the 2020 State Fairs in Springfield and DuQuoin.

They say the department has also been in close contact with the University of Illinois Extension 4-H Staff and the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs, looking at all options available to conduct shows and county fairs across the state this year.
