House Ag Committee eyes early 2024 for getting farm bill done

Direction from House Ag Committee leadership points to finishing a new farm bill early in 2024.

Committee member Randy Feenstra says chair GT Thompson suggested the bill could be finalized in December.

“It looks like that’s going to be very tough. We really don’t want a continuing resolution, but we might have to do that for about two months and get it done in January or early part of February. So that’s the consensus right now.”

The Iowa Republican tells Brownfield that’s when there will be floor time to debate the farm bill.

“The bottom line is we’ve got to get something passed. A lot of programs have sunset as of September 30th, and we have to make sure that we strengthen our crop insurance and open new export markets and fight foreign animal disease. These are critical things in this new farm bill.”

Feenstra says his biggest concern is election politics interfering if farm bill negotiations drag out in 2024.
