Hog markets remain focused on demand

A livestock economist says the lean hog market will likely remain focused on exports for the rest of the year.

University of Missouri’s Scott Brown says the USDA’s most recent export sales report showed an increase in sales to Mexico.  “That movement to the South was some welcome news when we’d really gone a long time waiting for hopefully better exports to China,” he says.  “Although those didn’t materialize – yet.  Certainly, seeing Mexico helped hams a lot in terms of prices.”

He tells Brownfield with the extremely large supplies of pork; global and domestic demand are crucial to keeping hog prices supported.
