Harvest resumes after weekend rains

Farmers in southeastern South Dakota are starting to resume harvest after the weekend rains.

Kevin Scott from Minnehaha County tells Brownfield the two inches of rain was needed.

“We needed it to moisten the soil back up so we can do some fall tillage and apply anhydrous for next year.”

Scott says he tried to harvest the most difficult corn fields before the rain came and he plans to be back in the field to harvest more corn by Tuesday.

“Yield is going to be variable on corn, up and down the hill there will be differences,” he says. “We are about 220 bushels/acre for our Actual Production History. I’ve got some corn that will be above that and some that will yield below that and if we have an average crop at APH we should be alright.”

Scott says soybean harvest wrapped up last week. He says soybeans were disappointing, about 15 bushels per acre shorter than last year due to gall midge, spider mite damage and other drought impacts.
