H-2A requests continue to increase

Requests for H-2A guest worker certification continues to rise with 11 percent more applications being requested so far this year. 

The Office of Foreign Labor Certification reports there have been more than 11,500 requests for applications, representing more than 206,000 jobs, during the first three quarters of 2019. 

Bob Boehm with Great Lakes Ag Labor Services says Michigan leads the Midwest as the largest user of the program and is eighth in the nation, with visa requests up more than three percent.  However, he says only up two percent from last year, 2019 does represent the slowest rate of growth for the program in Michigan over the last five years.

The Department of says the top uses for the program are general farm workers as well as workers for the tobacco, and fruit and vegetable industries.  Georgia, Washington, and Florida are the top three users of the program.
