Group asks Congress to stop ERS, NIFA relocation

A group of universities and science groups are asking leaders of the Senate Appropriations Committee to stop the USDA from moving the Economic Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture outside of Washington D.C.

In a letter, the groups say the relocation would jeopardize “the efficacy of state, local, private, and non-governmental sector funding for agricultural research and extension.” They are asking the senate appropriators to “reject funding cuts and reject the expenditure of funds to relocate the ERS and NIFA” to Kansas City.

The USDA says the move would save taxpayers $300 million dollars. But, a study by the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association says it would end up costing taxpayers between $80 and $180 million.

ERS and NIFA employees have until July 15th to decide if they will move to the Kansas City area.
