Funding for farmers in the Western Lake Erie Basin
The Chief of the Division of Soil and Water Conservation in Ohio says funding is available for farmers in the Western Lake Erie Basin of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, to help improve water quality in Lake Erie.
Kirk Hines at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA), tells Brownfield applications from livestock farmers in Ohio will receive priority funding.
“We’ll be looking for livestock farms that are basically doing best management practices just to reduce the time period for applying manure,” said Hines. “So basically looking at waste storage structures, nutrient placement and other similar practices.”
Hines says funding for conservation practices for farmers in Indiana and Michigan may be different than Ohio.
Farmers in the three states have until March 18 to apply for funds at local NRCS offices.
