Fieldwork at a standstill for SW Minnesota farmer

A farmer in southwest Minnesota has yet to turn a wheel this spring.

Joel Schreurs grows corn and soybeans in Lincoln and Lyon Counties.

“We just can’t catch a break. It seems like as soon as we think about looking at a piece of ground, we get another half inch to an inch of rain.”

A lot of farmers were able to get in the field earlier this week, but Schreurs tells Brownfield there’s been minimal activity in his area.

“I saw one neighbor go out and try it (Tuesday), but in my opinion it wasn’t fit.”

He estimates it will take at least a week of good weather for conditions to be suitable.

“We’re having issues with side hills. Where our tile is is typically dryer than what would normally be wet. It’s just been really frustrating.”

Schreurs says if delays drag on another 10 days, he’ll have to start looking at shorter season corn maturities.
