Ferrie: be thinking about prioritizing corn fields for harvest

It’s not too early to start thinking about prioritizing corn fields for harvest, according to Illinois-based Crop-Tech Consulting Owner Ken Ferrie.

He says growers should scout for stalk quality issues in the coming weeks.

“Right now, as the scouting goes on, ask yourself what are your ABC’s for harvest. I know we like to start maybe at the home place and end up at the furthest away field, but as conditions change we may have to jump around a little bit for this harvest to keep the stalk quality under it that we want.”

As far as other considerations, he tells Brownfield, “here toward the end of the growing season there’s not a lot they can do other than manage disease and maybe a few insects. Growers can go out in fields and check that disease and pest pressure.”

Ferrie spoke to Brownfield during a recent DEKALB/Asgrow field day in southern Indiana.
