February chicken, egg numbers rise

The USDA’s chicken and egg numbers were up in February.

February egg production climbed 5% on the year to 8.62 billion, with a slight decline in the number of layers canceled out by a higher rate of lay per hen.

Table and hatching egg production were both above year ago levels.

The number of egg type chicks hatched rose 7% with placements of egg type pullets into future hatchery supply flocks were 3% higher, whole broiler type chicks were up 3% and broiler type pullets moving to future domestic supply flocks were 6% higher.

The USDA’s updated annual poultry production projections are out April 11th.
