Farmers make largest planting push yet

USDA’s meteorologist says a planting window finally opened during the first week of June for major progress.

Brad Rippey says planting is still well behind schedule with corn 83 percent planted.

“That’s still the least U.S. corn planted by June 9.”

Indiana more than doubled planting progress. “Moving from 31 to 67 percent planted overall, Rippey says.

Rippey says for the corn that is planted, it’s not looking very healthy, with 59 percent of the crop rated good to excellent.

More than 20 percent of the nation’s soybean crop was planted last week, now 60 percent complete. “Soybean planting is still not at the halfway mark in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and South Dakota.”

Soybean emergence is also less than half of average, now at 34 percent.

Rippey says winter wheat heading also remains behind.
