Farmer sees benefits of biodiesel on his farm

A west central Illinois farmer says the biodiesel industry helps soybean growers improve their bottom line as they continue to face low commodity prices.

Jeff Lynn says the biodiesel industry benefits farmers by creating a new market for soybean oil.

“The opportunity is that it brings them a lot more money for their bushels of soybeans so right now we’re about 63 cents a bushel more because of biodiesel,” he says. “We’re around $8 a bushel for soybeans, so 63 cents is a lot more money so it’s a huge investment.”

And he tells Brownfield he sees the benefits of biodiesel first-hand on his farm.

“We just rolled our farm into B20 and I use it in our farm equipment and my personal vehicles,” he says. “We don’t have any problems- if you treat the fuel right it will treat you right.”

Lynn says he hopes more farmers will use biodiesel on their farm and continue to strengthen the industry.

Lynn is director of the Illinois Soybean Association, president of the National Biodiesel Foundation, and is a board member for the National Biodiesel Board.
