Farmer plans for some risk management

A Missouri farmer said he’s planning to market some grain right out of the field this harvest.

Richard Oswald tells Brownfield he’s looking to manage risk with pressure building in the market.

“The price isn’t too bad right now, but I’ve spent more putting in my corn crop this year than I’ve ever spent in my life,” he said.

The Atchison County farmer said his local price for new crop corn is hovering around $5.25…

“That’s sort of a bottom line for me,” he said. “I would really not want to sell for any less than that because I want to recover my costs and I want to save some money and I think it’s right where it needs to be.”

Oswald said any price that allows growers to cover their production and living cost with money left over is a good one.
