Farmer discusses importance of crop insurance in the ’23 Farm Bill

Ohio Farm Bureau members are meeting face-to-face with legislators in Washington D.C. to discuss issues that could impact Ohio farms.

Loren Hulit, president of Richland County Farm Bureau, spoke with Congressman Troy Balderson about the importance of protecting the safety net in the 2023 Farm Bill.

“Crop insurance provides tools to help us stay in business. If there’s one bad spring where you couldn’t get half of your crop in, for example, crop insurance helps you to pay the bills and get through the next year. If you didn’t have the crop insurance you would go belly up,” he says. “It helps you in the bad times and in the good times when you don’t need it, you pay it out and just move on.”

He tells Brownfield one of his favorite parts of the Washington D.C. Leadership Experience is the ability to meet with legislators.

“You you meet them, you get to talk to them and exchange numbers, and there’s been times they’ve personally reached out to us on ag topics,” he says.

Ohio Farm Bureau members also discussed climate, ag technology, inflation, and supply chain.
