Farmer learning to balance her roles on family farm

A southwest Indiana farmer is learning to juggle the roles of being both a family member and a co-worker at the 2019 Family Farms Conference.

Emily Cooper of Fort Branch, Indiana says recognizing that each of her family members is also a team player on their farming operation has been a profitable aspect of their business model.

“Looking at each of our family members as an integral team member of our business has allowed us to each be put in the areas within our business where we are the most successful. So that, at the end of the day, helps drive profit for the business because if I am doing what I am the best at, that is good for me and the business because I am going to want to keep going at it.”

Cooper says communication within her family is key to maintaining success on their farm.

“We have tried to implement within our own operation just keeping your whole family on the same team and communicating so that you can work toward that legacy that we are all striving for.”

Cooper credits the Family Farms group for teaching her important farm management skills.

The 2019 Family Farms Summer Conference wrapped up today in St. Charles, Missouri.
