Farmer finds success planting soybeans early

A farmer in western Indiana says he continues to see the benefits of planting soybeans early and extending the season.

Kevin Cox raises soybeans and corn in Brazil, Indiana.

“With all the seed treatments and everything that we have today and all the varieties and the breeding that goes into the hybrids today on soybeans, we’ve had pretty good success with planting soybeans early,” he says.

He says he’s planted soybeans early in recent years.

“This has been a trend with farmers starting to find that with the genetics bred into the plants today and seed treatments. Seed treatments today cost us more per acre than our seed cost used to be with soybeans. The technology is there and the advancements from that,” he says. “I’ve had times where we’ve had soybeans in the ground for a month and they’re still coming up.”

Speaking to Brownfield while planting, Cox said he typically likes to plant 500 acres of soybeans early before switching to some early corn.
