Farmer describes corn emergence, soybean disease issues

Southern Indiana farmer Ben Kron says he may have to replant some corn and soybeans because of cool and wet conditions.

“There are some crops that we’re going to end up going in and tearing out and completely replanting and some others we’ll patch in spots,” he says. “As far as what it’s going to do yield wise, whether it will be better or worse, I guess only time will tell on that.”

He tells Brownfield the corn crop has had emergence issues and there has been disease pressure in soybeans.

“The corn is having emergence issues from the cool and wet conditions and the same cool and wet conditions brought on early disease in soybeans,” he says. “The main one we’re seeing is Pythium (root rot) and we’ve actually had seedcorn maggot issues in our soybeans too so that’s a new one for us.”

Kron says he’s hoping for warmer temperatures in the coming weeks.
