Farmer consternation over new Trump tariffs

There’s consternation in farm country over President Trump’s new tariffs on Mexico.

Minnesota Corn Growers president Brian Thalmann says he’s extremely frustrated with the Commander-in-Chief.

“Our country has got to stop using the threat of tariffs just to try to change the way somebody else is doing business with us.”

Trump announced Thursday he would start new 5% tariffs on June 10th on all goods imported from Mexico until Mexico takes action to reduce the number of illegal aliens crossing its territory to reach the U.S.

Minnesota Pork Producers CEO David Preisler tells Brownfield the President continues to throw curveballs that have him scratching his head.

“I don’t think anyone expected that this announcement would come.”

And Thalmann says his patience with President Trump is wearing thin.

“When the policies and procedures start going against what’s best for American agriculture, it gets harder and harder to support an administration doing these types of things.”

Preisler says it sounds like Mexican trade officials will be traveling to Washington, D.C. for negotiations, and he’s hoping for a quick resolution.
