Ethanol industry leader says RINs on exports would defeat the purpose

The CEO of the American Coalition for Ethanol says he is concerned that a potential plan to allow ethanol exports to qualify for Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) is still on the table.

Brian Jennings says attaching RIN credits to exports would hurt domestic ethanol production.

“If it creates this glut of RINs on the market, it’s going to drive the price of RINs down to maybe a nickle or dime,” he says.

He tells Brownfield the decision would also go back on a promise made by EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt.

“He said to Republic senators, ‘we’ve thought about this export RIN issue, but we’re not going to do it’ in a letter,” he says “And now here we are now a few months later and they’ve sort of resurrected it.”

The idea to attach RINs to exports came out of a recent White House meeting on biofuels policy.
