Ernst ‘saddened’ by Tyson Foods pork plant closure

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst says the closure of a Tyson Foods pork processing plant in central Iowa was a shock to the livestock industry.

“I am very sad to see those jobs go. We have about 1300 jobs that will be lost in the Perry community.”

Speaking to Brownfield in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, the Iowa Republican said Tyson needs to reevaluate the decision. “I know that there are some other circumstances there with old facilities, but these are jobs. These are Iowa jobs right there in the heart of ag country.”

Tyson officials have said they are encouraging the impacted workers to apply for other positions within the company.
