Eastern SD farmer done with spring planting

A farmer in eastern South Dakota finished planting on Friday.

Paul Casper tells Brownfield once he could get into the field to plant corn in early May, progress moved quickly.

“Our last corn field is popping through the ground. Emergence has been even and we had dryness early on, but recent rains helped make up for any mistakes we had,” he says. “The soybeans are looking good.”

Casper says with warmer temperatures in the forecast, broadleaf weeds will start popping up.

“Here in the next two to three weeks, we’ll do some scouting and I hope our pre-emergence herbicides work and do what they need to do to get us later into the season.”

Casper raises corn and soybeans near Lake Preston.
