Dannon responds to ag groups over GMO decision

California dairy productsThe Dannon company has responded to concerns raised by six leading U.S. agriculture groups about that company’s decision to offer non-GMO yogurt products.

In a news release, Dannon said it believes currently approved GMOs are safe and that sustainable agricultural practices can be achieved with or without the use of GMOs. The company says it wants to provide a range of products that meet consumer demands, non-GMO being one of them.

Dannon says it believes the changes it wants in sustainable ag practices “can lead to a reduction in the usage of herbicides and pesticides.”

The US Farmers and Ranchers Alliance, National Corn Growers Association and four other groups, have written to Dannon saying the use of milk from cows fed non-GMO feed does not insure an INCREASE in on-farm sustainability.

They say biotechnology plays an important role in reducing the environmental footprint of agriculture – and challenge Dannon’s assertion “that sustainability is enhanced by stopping the use of GMO processes.”
