Dairy research network turns 35

A milestone has been reached for the dairy checkoff program.  It was 35 years ago the checkoff-funded Dairy Foods Research Centers Network was created to provide innovative and science-backed solutions to meet consumer demand and business trends.

Dairy Management Inc. provides structure and oversight for the network, which involves more than 20 universities and 400 dairy businesses.

One of many breakthroughs was taking a previously wasted byproduct and making whey protein into a 10-billion dollar a year industry.

Pennsylvania dairy farmer and DMI chair Marilyn Hershey says researchers are working every day to keep dairy relevant in an ever-growing competitive environment, which is helping to secure a stronger future for the industry.
