Cover Crop Premium Discount Program open for enrollment in Indiana

Southern Indiana farmers can receive a discount on their crop insurance premiums for planting cover crops and protecting water quality.

Trevor Laureys with the Indiana State Department of Agriculture tells Brownfield the Cover Crop Premium Discount Program provides a $5 per acre crop insurance discount.

“This program really aims to promote planting of additional acres of cover crops that may not be covered by those typical programs and just incentivize that voluntary practice,” he says.

He says up to 35,000 acres of cover crops in 26 counties are eligible for the program in 2024.

Farmers in Bartholomew, Brown, Clark, Crawford, Daviess, Dearborn, Decatur, Floyd, Greene, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Morgan, Ohio, Orange, Randolph, Ripley, Scott, Shelby, Switzerland, and Washington counties can participate.

Funding for the program is provided by a Clean Water Indiana grant and the Cummins Foundation.

Applications are due March 15.
