Congress moves closer to one-year ELD delay

The Senate has passed an amendment that would extend the electronic logging device (ELD) waiver for livestock haulers by one year. The current waiver expires on September 30th.

The amendment, introduced by Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, is attached to the Minibus Appropriations bill passed by the Senate. Fischer says the delay would give her more time “to bring more commonsense to these rules and provide additional flexibility”.

The one-year extension still needs to pass the U.S. House before it can become law. Similar language is included in a House spending bill.

The Nebraska Cattlemen’s (NC) organization applauds the move, saying the ELD mandate causes serious animal welfare concerns. “One-size-fits-all regulations do not work when hauling live animals,” said NC president Galen Frenzen.
